NEED YOUR HELP IN Mississippi - Toys for The Children Living in The Aftermath of Katrina
Date: Sat, 9 Dec 2006 19:13:45 -0700
Dear Caring People,
I received the note below last week from the Executive Director of The
Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast . As you probably know all but two of the kids Clubs in that area were completely destroyed/leveled.
They are still operating in temporary structures. They service some of the most at risk kids in the region and their membership has increased with the layered issues that now exist. Hands On has been sending volunteers since last year to assist/mentor the children to help keep the clubs running, as so many of those who were volunteering have either left the area or now in need themselves.
I am hoping that you can help me rally your church group and coworkers and/or forward this email to anyone who loves children, so that we can reach out to these kids who are in need of support at this time. (Also, please help post to the boards that would be great.); “Games, puzzles, dolls, trucks, balls, purses for older girls or makeup cases. Just anything you can. We have boys & girls 5 to 18 but most are in the mid range 7 to 12.”
I have gotten FedEx to agree to help ship the toy collections (not individual items) to Mississippi. Anyone, in any state, that has gathered more than 30 NEW toys can contact me at suzanneinmississippi@earthlink.net
I can help them ship, at no charge, to the Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast or, if needed, to the Hands On Gulf Coast base, for distribution to the children. I can also arrange for larger scale shipping if any someone who is running a Toy Drive from anywhere in the U.S. realizes that they have collected more than they need and would be willing to share with these kids.
There are 5,000 families registered for toys on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and that
they have only collected enough toys for 1,000 of them. I just got back last Tuesday from my 11th trip (almost 7 months in the region) and I know first hand that these kids are having a particularly difficult time right now, so I am hoping that you can find a way to help.
Warmest Wishes,
Suzanne Stahl
